Abstract

Abstract. Bowel microflora is one of the most complex econiches, often considered as a separate organ of the human body. In the paper it is presented the investigation of presence and number of plasmids isolated from E.coli strains taken from the patients' bowel of different age categories. Particular attention is paid to bacteriocins (colicins) in fact presenting antimicrobial compounds. Bacteriocins are antimicrobial peptides produced by bacteria to compete with other bacteria for nutrients and ecological niches. The antimicrobial effect of these peptides on the bacterial populations in the gut is likely dynamic as the survival of the microbes in this environment depends on both competition and cooperation.
