Introduction. Tooth loss and the associated loss of occlusal support are accompanied by changes in occlusal relationships, redistribution of masticatory loads, and alterations in neuromuscular coordination. Dental implantation enables restoration of dental arch integrity and occlusal support; however, the significance of the baseline functional status of the temporomandibular joint for the outcomes of implant treatment remains insufficiently defined. Aim. To analyze current scientific evidence regarding the relationship between temporomandibular disorders, changes in the occlusal and functional status of patients with dental arch defects, and the outcomes of dental implantation, as well as to determine the potential significance of temporomandibular disorders in the development of biological and mechanical complications of dental implantation. Materials and methods. A review of the scientific literature addressing temporomandibular disorders in patients with dental arch defects and their potential significance for the planning and prognosis of dental implantation was conducted. Results. Despite the considerable number of studies addressing individual aspects of the relationship between temporomandibular disorders and dental implantation, their influence on the development of biological and mechanical complications of implant-supported prosthetic restorations remains inconclusive. Conclusions. Restoration of occlusal support with dental implants may contribute to the normalization of masticatory function and reduction of certain manifestations of temporomandibular disorders. At the same time, disturbances in maxillomandibular relationships, inappropriate restoration of the occlusal vertical dimension, and occlusal instability during prosthetic rehabilitation may create unfavorable biomechanical conditions and contribute to the development or exacerbation of functional disorders.
