Abstract

Introduction. Today, the prevalence of caries of permanent teeth among children in the world and in Ukraine, in particular, is high, and, unfortunately, does not have a tendency to decrease. Thus, the prevalence of caries of permanent teeth among children in the world ranges from 61.70–91.70% with an intensity of damage from 1.85 to 3.93 teeth. In Ukraine, the prevalence of caries of permanent teeth in children aged 7–17 is within 20.00–96.67% with an intensity of damage from 0.25 to 6.4 teeth. Purpose. To study the prevalence and intensity of caries of permanent teeth in children aged 12–15, to evaluate the indicators depending on age and gender, and to compare the obtained data with previous results. Materials and methods of the study. To achieve the goal, with the written consent of parents to conduct research, we examined 214 schoolchildren aged 12–15 years in accordance with the main provisions of the Declaration of Helsinki on Biomedical Research (Seoul, 2008). We studied the prevalence of caries – in % and the intensity of caries – according to the indicator of DMFT, DMFS index. Research results. According to the results we obtained, it was established that the prevalence of caries in permanent teeth was 85.98% with an intensity of, on average, 4.46 teeth. Analysis by gender revealed higher values in girls than in boys (87.61% versus 84.40%) with an intensity of 4.60 teeth and 4.32 teeth, respectively. It was established that among children aged 12–15 years, the DMFS value was higher than the DMFT index by 18.16%. A clear trend towards an increase in the number of tooth surfaces affected by caries with age was also found (from 4.04 tooth surfaces at 12 years to 6.87 tooth surfaces at 15 years). When compared with the results of previous studies, no significant difference between the values was found, however, there is a tendency towards a slight decrease in the indicators. Conclusions. The high incidence of caries in permanent teeth in children of different ages requires continued comprehensive research and improvement of preventive programs with subsequent implementation in practical work.
